South Sydney is the inner southern suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The region covers the local government areas of the City of Sydney, Bayside Council and the Inner West Council. The area is historically significant due to the many important events that have taken place over the years. From the first colony of Australia to modern-day urbanization, the region has seen it all.

Aboriginal History

The South Sydney area was inhabited by the Gadigal people, who were part of the Eora Nation. They lived in the region for thousands of years before European colonization. The Aboriginal people lived in harmony with the land, fishing, hunting and collecting natural resources.

Colonization and the First Fleet

The first fleet arrived in Sydney in 1788. Governor Arthur Phillip established a settlement at Sydney Cove, which later developed into the city we know today. South Sydney was part of the early colony and played a significant role in the early days of the city.
